LAGOS – Despite her well-honed sales pitch, Aanu Ajayi is often met by scepticism when out selling energy-efficient stoves in the Nigerian city of Lagos – highlighting some of the hurdles Africa faces in switching to climate-friendly cooking.
“I had to do live demos in their kitchens and restaurants before I could sell any of the stoves,” Ajayi, 39, told Context as she unpacked the gleaming steel stoves from their boxes, adding that attitudes were slowly changing.
“The women see that it doesn’t give out black smoke or heat up their kitchen like the firewood they use,” she said.

LAGOS – Ondanks haar geoefende verkooppraatje wordt Aanu Ajayi vaak geconfronteerd met scepsis als ze energiezuinige fornuizen verkoopt in de Nigeriaanse stad Lagos. Dit benadrukt een aantal van de hindernissen waarmee Afrika wordt geconfronteerd bij de overstap naar klimaatvriendelijk koken.
“Ik moest live demo’s geven in hun keukens en restaurants voordat ik een van de fornuizen kon verkopen,” vertelde Ajayi, 39, aan Context terwijl ze de glanzend stalen fornuizen uit hun dozen pakte.
“De vrouwen zien dat het geen zwarte rook verspreidt of hun keuken verhit zoals het brandhout dat ze gebruiken,” zei ze.
